Benefits of Taking Honey in the Morning

The Surprising Health Benefits of Taking Honey in the Morning

Manuka honey, native to the rich landscape of New Zealand, has a long-established history of being a natural supplement for supporting daily wellness. This honey can aid in everyday home remedies for ailments like sore throats and sinus trouble. The natural supplement has also been beneficial in improving more severe health issues such as infections, ulcers, and digestive problems.

Incorporating a spoonful of honey into your everyday morning routine is an easy way to benefit your overall health and avoid illnesses down the line. Manuka honey is a fantastic healthy, natural substitute for processed sugar and delicious with your morning snack, tea, or coffee. Using manuka honey in the morning is a simple daily habit that helps boost your immune system and provides you with a healthy kick start to your day.

How Manuka Honey Is Beneficial for Internal Health and Immunity

The ingredients of honey have been found to consist of proteins, vitamins, amino acids, alkaloids, and antioxidants such as flavonoids and polyphenols. All of these properties make it a fantastic daily booster for your immune system and internal health support.

Manuka honey in particular has shown to have higher phenolic content than regular honey, and it is these phytonutrients that are responsible for its powerful antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activity.

It’s important to note here that there are significant variances in health benefits when considering raw honey versus heat-treated or processed honey. Raw honey retains all of the crucial proteins, antioxidants, and enzymes that contribute to the long list of health benefits, however, once it has been subjected to heat above 118° F, it loses these vital nutrients and can no longer be considered raw.

All honey has a peroxide activity that is antibacterial. However, this peroxide activity is not heat-stable and is therefore killed through pasteurization, and most honey on supermarket shelves has been pasteurized.

At Steen’s, our manuka honey is UMF Certified, meaning it is held to the highest quality and testing standards.

My Personal Experience with Manuka Honey and Its Healing Properties

This impressive honey has led to a multitude of success stories but one that sticks with me involves my husband, Paul. Paul and I have never been quick to jump into taking medications as a first resort and will research published papers on natural alternatives every time.

When Paul was first diagnosed with a Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection as being responsible for his stomach ulcers, our first line of defense was manuka honey. The specialist called him a poor man to have a gut that bad, and antibiotics were prescribed.

Paul instead took a teaspoon of high-activity manuka honey, a minimum strength of UMF 20+, each morning and throughout the day as he felt the need. He took it before bed, and throughout the night since his gut pain would wake him.

He was tested a second time, and the specialist was dumbfounded, as he knew we hadn't done the prescribed antibiotic treatment, but Paul's stomach was miraculously clear. He then reduced the honey intake, but a daily teaspoon every morning is now part of his routine. I'll never forget the specialist’s words, “I don't know what has happened here, but keep doing what you’re doing” and so we have. Manuka honey has become our daily essential vitamin every morning!

Ways to Take Manuka Honey Daily

There are so many creative and fun ways to incorporate manuka honey into your daily life.

One of my favorite ways is to start the morning by drinking a glass of warm water with manuka honey and a squeeze of fresh lemon when I first get up. It's the perfect energy boost that sets you up for the day and a delicious cleanse for the body.

Add it to your morning smoothie (you can follow my smoothie recipe), spread over toast, or drizzled over oatmeal or cereal. I made French toast the other morning and manuka honey was a fabulous substitute for maple syrup (I’m wondering if this is sacrilege for some!) It pairs so well with other foods; it's easy to add to your regular routine and makes it that much more delicious and supportive for your body. In our house, we add it to overnight soaked oats, which we top with fresh fruit, yoghurt, nuts, raw cacao, activated buckwheat, and hemp hearts. The thought gets me out of bed every morning!

Adding honey into your daily routine is incredibly easy just by simply switching from processed sugar to beautiful bio-active manuka honey. In addition, honey is twice as sweet as sugar, so you only need half as much to sweeten your life. I am always saddened when dead white sugar crystals are put in the same conversation and compared to honey which is a beautiful, healthy, bioactive food. And, because of the way we extract our manuka here at Steens Honey, all the beneficial bee-bread is retained. Our Whole Comb Technology provides a rich flavor profile full of proteins, vitamins, calcium, and potassium.
