Kiwifruit, Matcha and Manuka Honey Fruit Smoothie

sheryl's kitchen

Welcome!

Paul and I started Steens Honey nearly 40 years ago, and we're still just as passionate about our bees as we always were. I love using our deliciously raw, grainy honey to create recipes with ingredients fresh from our garden in Papamoa Hills.

The bees were going gangbusters in the late winter sun when I went outside to pick the fresh, baby spinach for this smoothie. They might only be tiny creatures but they are truly incredible, Paul and I have always had a love affair with them lasting nearly 40 years now...where has that time gone!

September is ‘Bee Aware Month,’ here in NZ, it’s a great time to reflect on just how important they are in our survival and our enjoyment of this world. Not only do they colour and clothe the earth but without them our diets would absolutely suffer as certain foods would diminish and the cost of many others would escalate.

A third of the worlds food population depends on them, so every third spoonful of food relies on pollination. We’d still be able to make delicious, healthy smoothies like the ones I made here, but apples, citrus, berries and almond milk to name just a few wouldn’t be part of them.

We live in the kiwifruit capital of the world, bees and kiwifruit are synonymous in our region as thousands of bee hives are trucked into orchards every spring for pollination, so what better way to celebrate them both but in a hearty, green smoothie using our local organic fruit and our beautiful, raw manuka honey made by our bees!

INGREDIENTS

1-2 kiwifruit

1 banana

1 cup coconut water

Handful of baby spinach

1 tsp Matcha powder (powerful antioxidant)

2 tbsp Manuka Honey (antibacterial)

2 tbsp hemp hearts/seeds (that’s 25% of your daily iron needs)

1 tsp lemon zest (loaded with restorative polyphenol antioxidants)

2 tbsp yoghurt

To Make

Pop everything in the blender, whizz on high for about 2 minutes, and pulse if a few bits get stuck at the top.

Pour into a glass/bottle

Drizzle a bit of extra honey over the top if you like to finish with a sweet, sticky Manuka treat, sprinkle chia seeds on the top, or include them in the smoothie for a more filling treat.

Happy days 💚

Sheryl
